Twilight: Director’s Notebook

Exciting news for fans of Twilight the movie! Little, Brown will be publishing Twilight: Director’s Notebook written by Catherine Hardwicke. It will be released on March 17th. This intimate look on making the movie will include inside secrets on everything from casting to wardrobe along with personal notes from Catherine and behind-the-scenes photographs. Scroll down to read the press release and here to read Entertainment Weekly’s article.

February 4, 2009 (New York, NY) — Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of Hachette Book Group, will release Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight: Director’s Notebook as a one-day laydown on March 17, 2009, it was announced today by Megan Tingley, the division’s Senior Vice President and Publisher. This intimate look at the making of Summit Entertainment’s film follows visionary director Hardwicke through the creative process. Designed to replicate the director’s own personal notebook that she kept on set, readers will discover the inside secrets on casting, location scouting and wardrobe to storyboard sketches, behind-the-scenes photographs, personal notes about Catherine’s favorite scenes and much more. This one-of-a-kind experience for all Twilight fans will be released in hardcover for $17.99 with an announced first printing of 500,000 copies.

“With this book, I tried to show fans and aspiring filmmakers some of the process that the crew and I went through filming Twilight,” said Hardwicke. “My challenge was to translate Stephenie’s powerful book and make you feel what she makes you feel when you read her words.”

The movie version of Twilight has grossed over $340 million worldwide since its release on November 21, 2008. The movie debuted at #1 at the box office with $70 million, making it the highest debut for a female director. Twilight: Director’s Notebook is being released just in time for the March 21st multi-million copy release of Twilight on DVD.

In three years, Stephenie Meyer has become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. The Twilight Saga’s translation rights have been sold in 39 countries and over 42 million copies have been sold worldwide. The last book in the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn, sold 1.3 million copies in its first day on-sale, breaking publisher records.

Catherine Hardwicke trained as an architect at the University of Texas, and started in film as a production designer. She designed over 20 films, including Tombstone, Tank Girl, Three Kings, and Vanilla Sky. Hardwicke’s debut as a feature film co-writer and director was the Sundance award winning Thirteen. Made for under $2 million dollars, it garnered an Academy Award-nomination for Holly Hunter. She has since directed Lords of Dogtown, The Nativity Story, and most recently, Twilight.

E! Online: New Moon Maybe: 90210’s AnnaLynne McCord

Another 90210-er may be making a stop in the Twilight zone.
300mccordpattinson2020409
I’m hearing that filmmakers have been considering the idea of casting 90210 star AnnaLynne McCord as Heidi in the upcoming New Moon, the much-anticipated sequel to Twilight.

Heidi isn’t a major character in the book, but McCord definitely has the gorgeous looks to pull it off.

The character is a “fisher” who brings humans to the Volturi vampires to eat. She’s also known as “bait” because of the way she uses her stunning looks to attract humans. In her brief appearance in the book, Bella describes Heidi as having “exceptional, unforgettable” beauty. She has stunning legs, long hair and violet eyes.

Sources tell me McCord has auditioned for the role. “It’s not a big part,” one of the sources said. “Heidi would be more like a cameo.”

McCord should feel pretty comfortable on the set. Her 90210 costar Kellan Lutz—and rumored real-life boyfriend—played Emmett in Twilight and will return for the sequel.

McCord’s rep did not immediately comment nor did a rep for the studio, Summit Entertainment.

Director Chris Weitz is expected to start shooting the flick with Robert Pattinson & Co. next month in Vancouver and Italy with a Nov. 20 release date. Summit has yet to make any major new casting announcements for New Moon. However, as I exclusively reported, Dakota Fanning is in serious talks to play Jane.

Memorable Movie Quotes:

Bella: Are you going to tell me how you stopped the van?
Edward: Yeah. Um… I had an adrenaline rush. It’s very common. You can Google it.

Edward: What did you expect? Coffins and dungeons and moats?
Bella: No, not the moats.

Twilight Movie Trivia

* Kristen Stewart has naturally green eyes. She wears brown contacts for filming to match Bella’s eye color.

* Kellan Lutz intended on keeping his natural curly hair for the role of Emmett Cullen. However, his previous role in “Generation Kill” (2008) required a buzz cut and his hair didn’t grow fast enough for the filming of Twilight (2008).

* Henry Cavill was Stephenie Meyer’s first choice to play Edward. However, but by the time production was to begin, he was 25 years old, and no longer looked the part of a 17-year old. He was then offered the part of Carlisle Cullen but turned it down due to his commitment with “The Tudors” (2007).

* For the role of Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson flew from England to director Catherine Hardwicke’s house to audition. There, he and Kristen Stewart, who was already cast as Bella Swan, rehearsed the “Love Scene”/”Meadow Scene” on Hardwicke’s own bed.

* All of the actors playing the Cullens wear topaz-colored contacts.

* Taylor Lautner had to wear a wig for his role as Jacob Black.

* Over 5,000 actors auditioned for the role of Edward.

Twilight Movie Goofs (I posted all of these because they really interested me!)

* Continuity: While Bella is in the hospital (for the second time) it shows the first shot of her eyes and nose. She has oxygen tubes running to her nose. The tubes are over top of her eyes, but when the camera zooms out the tubes are nowhere near her eyes. Then it zooms back in and the tubes are at her eyes again, and so on.

* Continuity: When Edward drops Bella off at the police station on the way back from Port Angeles, she doesn’t have her bag, which contained the book she picked up from the book store that she uses later on to research the “cold ones”.

* Revealing mistakes: When Charlie gives Bella the mace, he hands her a green can. Green cans are inert and used for training purposes.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The vampires are revealed to sparkle when exposed in the sun. However, when Edward and Bella come to school, he is seen to be wearing sunglasses, an item that would not be necessary if he was trying to avoid the sun. However, it’s clear he is wearing them as a fashion accessory.

* Continuity: When Bella is in the forest to confront Edward on who he is the flap on his right shoulder of the jacket Edward is wearing is buttoned down, in the following scene, unbuttoned, then buttoned again.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Edward is telling Bella how much he could hurt her, his hand on the tree goes from being flat against it, to resting on his fingers and back again. However, in the the books vampires are much faster than humans and Edward could have easily moved his hand without it being seen on film.

* Revealing mistakes: In the scene with Edward and Bella talking in the cafeteria (when she drops the apple and he catches it) it is apparent that he has pit stains. Vampires don’t sweat.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Bella is confronting Edward about being a vampire, there are what appears to be visible bite marks on the left side of his neck. However, these are moles, not bite marks.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: There’s a scene where Edward and Bella are talking in the forest, it’s raining heavily and they are soaking wet. Soon after they are shown talking in another forest location, and appear to be completely dry. This could, however, indicate the passage of time, especially given their change of clothes. It is therefore assumed that their conversation takes place over several days.

* Continuity: It’s been stated many times that the vampires do not change at all, ever. Yet Edward has varying degrees of stubble throughout the film.

* Miscellaneous: In the final credits, “Emmett” is misspelled.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the scene in the garage, Edward asks Rosalie and Esme to put on Bella’s clothing to mislead the tracker. Edward is shown throwing clothes towards Esme. Esme was in the scene for quite a while, getting stuff in the background. She was just out of frame when he actually addressed her.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the garage scene, Rosalie and Emmett are seen putting their belongings in Emmett’s jeep and getting in. In the next shot, the jeep is no longer in the garage, and the two cars being taken are Rosalie’s convertible and Carlisle’s Mercedes. However, the jeep hasn’t left the garage yet – it’s just out of frame in the next shot. Esme takes Rosalie’s convertible which is why it leaves the same time as Carlisle’s Mercedes.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Edward says in the movie that vampires never sleep but when Bella wakes up from sleeping in the hospital he also appears to be sleeping. In fact, he was pretending to sleep in order to appear normal, and to give Bella and her mom privacy to talk.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the very last scene, Victoria turns to leave the balcony overlooking the gazebo where Bella and Edward are dancing, with her hair tied up. As the camera cuts to her leaving down the stairs, her hair can be seen flowing behind her. However, Victoria actually reaches up and pulls out her hair pin just as she reaches the top of the stairs.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In the scene where Bella goes to the ballet studio to give herself up for her mother, James the vampire is visible in all of the mirrors. As the legend goes, vampires’ reflections are not supposed to be seen in mirrors. Yet both the movie and books often diverge from traditional vampiric legends, such as mirror reflections, burning in sunlight, wooden stakes, repelling from crosses, and so on.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Charlie takes Bella to her room you see three naked Barbies in her room. One is on her desk under the bulletin board and the other two are on the wall behind her, near the bulletin board. As the movie continues they have disappeared. As Bella makes the room her own with her own items, it is inevitable that she moves things around, including the Barbies.

* Continuity: When Charlie is telling Bella that the security guard had been killed by the “animal,” you can clearly hear that it is raining but neither Bella nor Charlie are getting wet and no rain can be seen.

* Revealing mistakes: Throughout the entire movie the vampires’ contact lenses are clearly visible in close ups. For example, during Bella’s flashback after the car accident, you see a close-up of Edward’s eye – the outer rim of the contacts Robert Pattinson is wearing is distinctly visible.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Edward brings Bella to meet his family, Rosalie (Nikki Reed) is wearing gloves to protect her hands from the shatter-bowl she is holding. However, this could also have been a normal accessory to her outfit, much like a jacket or coat, in an effort to appear human; especially considering the temperature of Forks, Washington.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: After Edward saves Bella from the car crash, she overhears him, Carlisle and Rosalie talking in the hospital. Vampires are usually so fast and low that human ears cannot understand it, but they can also talk quickly and quietly – in this instance there were other people around, thus the reason they were talking “human”.

* Continuity: Throughout the film, dark roots appear and disappear from Rosalie’s hair. This is due to the fact Nikki Reed’s hair is naturally very dark instead of blonde.

* Continuity: When Bella confronts Edward, her red book bag on the left of the screen seems to flip and move around in different shots on the scene.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: James, Laurent and Victoria not noticing the fact Bella was human when they first arrived at the baseball field. Not only would they smell her blood (James in particular, being a tracker) but their enhanced hearing would allow them to hear her heart beating. However, in the books, the three arrive at the baseball field, and are there for a few minutes before the wind blows Bella’s scent to them, alerting them that she is human.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Victoria’s presence going unnoticed at prom. Edward can read minds, Alice can see the future and all of the Cullens have enhanced vampire senses so the chances of her going by unnoticed is highly unlikely. While some have said it is possible that Alice would not be focusing on Victoria and Edward was too preoccupied with Bella to hear Victoria’s thoughts, Edward specifically says to Bella (right after Alice sees James change course) “the woman is still in the area”. Knowing that Victoria was still in Forks, Edward and Alice would certainly still be keeping an eye out for her and since Edward had heard Victoria’s thoughts and voice already, he would know what to listen for. He definitely should have noticed her at the prom, however, if he had noticed her he would have gone after her and that would have diverged from the book too much. Victoria’s purpose at the prom was simply to leave a cliffhanger for the next movie (though it does cause some factual mistakes).

* Revealing mistakes: In the scene with Edward and Bella lying in the grass, you can see Edward’s carotid pulsating. In the ‘Twilight’ books, vampires do have hearts, but they do not beat.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: After Bella is out of the hospital she still wears a leg brace when she is heading to prom. But she doesn’t have any bandage or mark on her right arm from when she was bitten. However, the venom that changes human to vampire heals the body in that process, thus also the skin. There might be a scar, but the wound would certainly be healed well enough for Bella to go without bandages.

* Continuity: In the ballet studio when James breaks Bella’s leg, it looks broken, but at a far away shot, she is holding her leg, and it does not look broken. Later, after Edward falls and she slides away, she moves both of her legs. If it was broken, she would be in too much pain to move it.

* Revealing mistakes: Throughout the film, various vampire’s ears and necks are not paled out, only their faces. Especially in one of the cafeteria scenes, Robert Pattinson’s ears are extremely red.

* Boom mic visible: In scene where Charlie brings the truck back with new tires. The boom mike is visible in the reflection on the front fender of the truck.

* Continuity: In the beginning when Charlie is driving Bella to the house he has his windshield wipers on and its not even raining.

* Continuity: In one of the scenes with Edward’s car, when his car approaches, he has Oregon license plates. As he spins the car around and drives off, the plates appear to be Washington plates.

* Continuity: While at prom dancing under the gazebo, two couples exit to give Edward and Bella privacy. When the camera cuts to a different view, you can see the second couple leaving again.

* Continuity: In the scene where Bella and her friends go down to La Push, Bella, Jacob and his friends all have candy in their hand but in the next scene it’s gone, and then it’s back again.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Jacob confronts Bella at the prom scene she is shown in just her dress. A couple of shots later when Edward cuts in, she has a sweater on. If you watch Edward closely, though, you see him holding her sweater and then he drapes it over her shoulders before turning away from Jacob.

* Crew or equipment visible: When Edward is telling Bella “you better hold on tight, spider monkey” you can see his harness pulling his shirt up.

* Errors in geography: When the girls are in the dress shop you can see two flags in front of the building across the street. One is the American flag and the other is the state flag – it’s Blue with a Yellow symbol. This is Oregon’s flag not Washington’s. Washington’s flag is green with a black and white symbol of George Washington.

* Continuity: When Bella first sits next to Edward in biology and he visibly recoils, there are two samples on their shared desk. Edward nudges one towards her and pulls the other towards himself, but in the next shot, they’re back next to each other in the center of the desk.

* Continuity: In the meadow scene, Edward and Bella are lying very closely together at first, but when the camera angle switches, they are suddenly quite a bit farther apart even though they should have been in the same positions.

* Crew or equipment visible: When Bella first arrives in Forks, she and her father are in the car on their way to the house. In a medium shot you can visibly see a small camera on the windscreen wiper on the left hand side.

* Factual errors: In the scene in the cafeteria with the background of flags, the Kenyan flag (the green, red and black one with a shield) is hung upside down, the black stripe should be the topmost.

* Revealing mistakes: Throughout the movie you can see the vampires’ breath. In the book Edward states they can breathe because it enhances their ability to smell and helps them blend in as ‘normal’, but you would not be able to physically see their breath because they have no actual body warmth.

* Revealing mistakes: When Dr. Cullen is treating Bella in the E.R., the x-ray on the view box behind him is wrong (upper left x-ray). It is an x-ray of the spine of the upper back and it is upside down.

* Revealing mistakes: In the end, when Bella is in the hospital for the second time, Edward leaves lip marks on Bella’s forehead when he kisses her. This is probably due to the makeup, including lipstick, Robert Pattinson is wearing to match the vampires pale complexion.

* Revealing mistakes: In the last close-up of the movie, Edward’s face is close to Bella’s and it is extremely noticeable that his skin is at least 5 shades darker than hers. Vampires are supposed to be the palest of pale.

* Crew or equipment visible: When Bella is in her bedroom and wearing a green shirt, she lifts her arms up for a second to do something and you can clearly see her audio wire on her side under her shirt.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: In a scene in the lunch room, Emmett is clearly seen chewing on food. It has been stated time and time again in the books that vampires do not eat, and their food always remained untouched during lunch. (Indeed, Stephenie Meyer mentions on her website that they kept having to redo those scenes because Emmett kept eating.) However, in the book, Edward does mention that he can indeed eat human food, he just doesn’t like the taste of it. He compares this to how humans eat food they don’t like, but pretend to. This could explain why Emmett was “eating” during that scene.

* Continuity: When Edward is lying next to Bella on her bed, moonlight (sunlight reflected off the moon) is coming in through her window and hitting his face, chest, and hand, but they are not sparkling.

* Continuity: When Bella is in the ballet studio, she smacks her head against the wall and begins to bleed; however, when she’s shown in the hospital, her head is not bandaged.

* Continuity: When Alice pitches to both Rosalie (for the 2nd time) & Jasper in the baseball scene, the runner is running from second base before she even throws the ball. Then after both have hit the ball, the runner is seen again just leaving second base.

* Factual errors: In the scene in the cafeteria with the background of flags, the last flag behind Edward is an old Yugoslav flag – the red, white and blue with a red star. The country and the flag do not exist anymore. Furthermore, the Yugoslav flag was blue-white-red; and the red-white-blue was of ex Social Republic of Croatia (republic within Yugoslavia).

* Continuity: There are several cases where Robert Pattinson’s American accent seems to slip into the actor’s native British accent.

* Revealing mistakes: In the scene where Edward is driving Bella to his house to escape from the Tracker (James), he jumps in the bed of the truck and opens the door to climb inside. When he does, you can clearly see it’s his stunt double.

* Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When Edward and Bella are in the car and she says she’s warm enough they both go to touch the button, but you can see an early reaction on Edward pulling himself back a bit before they even show him pulling his hand away. However, in Midnight Sun, when he is about to touch her face for the first time, he pulls away suddenly, thinking that his cold skin might repel her. Given that this was the first time they touched in the movie, his pulling away could actually show his reluctance and his fear that Bella would leave him.

The Parthenon: Twilight saga helps book sales along with raising students’ interest in reading

Entertainment ranging from a wide variety of movies, television and music are recognized each year with glamorous award celebrations, while books only make lists and the few notable ones win a Pulitzer.

The book lists, such as the well-known New York Times Bestsellers List, provide readers insight to books are considered to be the “it” books each time that the list is published. Just because books don’t receive the kind of glamour that other forms of entertainment receive through high-profile celebrations doesn’t mean that the published works of fiction and nonfiction go unnoticed.

It may not have made the top 10 of 2008 in The New York Times Bestsellers List, but the “Twilight” series by Stephenie Meyer swept away millions of readers across the country telling an unconventional tale of vampire love. A recent article by USA Today reported that Meyer’s series sold approximately 22 million copies in 2008.

Darren Jones, general manager of Borders at the Huntington Mall, said that he didn’t have a complete list of the top bestsellers for the store but the most notable sellers were books from the “Twilight” series, especially during the Christmas season.

“I think the entire country was reading Stephanie Meyer,” Jones said.

Empire Books and News general manager Jessica Messinger said that people of many ages would come in to purchase books from Meyer’s series.

As the popularity for Meyer’s series grew and eventually sparked a movie, Marshall University students took notice.

“I see a lot more college students coming in for them than I used to see, and then they also start buying other books,” Messinger said.

Katie Stewart, freshman biomedical science major from Ironton, Ohio, said that she loves to read and tries to read at least one book a month. Stewart said she doesn’t typically keep up with any particular bestseller lists but did read the “Twilight” series and Meyer is currently her favorite author.

“I started reading them after seeing the movie (“Twilight”), and I’m completely into them,” she said.

Eric Stanley, junior forensic chemistry major, said he usually reads multiple books a week or a month, and he has four or five favorite authors. Stanley didn’t acknowledge any particular styles of books he likes to read other than what is generally fiction.

“It’s there, so I read it,” Stanley said.

Stanley is another student who can be counted in to the mass of people who read the Twilight series.

MediaBlvd: Dakota Fanning in ‘Coraline’

MediaBlvd> Has there been any movement on your role in New Moon?

Dakota> Well, it’s not 100% for sure yet that I will be doing it, but it’s definitely not a rumor or anything. It’s definitely a possibility, and something that I’m excited about.

MediaBlvd> Is there anything from the book you would really look forward to playing?

Dakota> I don’t know. I just think the character is what I would be excited about. She’s kind of evil, which something I’ve never done before, and she’s a vampire. It’s really cool, so I really hope that it works out.

MediaBlvd> Do you have any favorite vampire movies?

Dakota> I don’t. The only vampire movie I’ve really seen has been Twilight.

MediaBlvd> What did you think of the film?

Dakota> I am definitely a fan. I’m a big fan of the actors in the film. To be a part of that would really be a great privilege.

MediaBlvd> Have you read all the books?

Dakota> I haven’t read all four yet. I’m working on it. I’m getting there. I’m just about to finish the first one.

MediaBlvd> So, you haven’t actually read New Moon yet?

Dakota> No, not yet.

MediaBlvd> Everyone seems so supportive of you possibly being in the film. Does that make you feel good?

Dakota> It does. I know that Twilight is so sacred to some people, and I know that when they cast certain people, people have their opinions, and that’s their right. It’s very flattering that they think I’d be right for the part, and I hope it works out.
